The Vilamoura Grand Prix marked the beginning of the 2025 season for over 300 sailors, with six different classes competing in the Atlantic waters. Among them, the Oceana Vivo team, made up of Max Ross and Zac Blomeley, participated in the demanding Olympic 49er class, facing a week of changing conditions and tactical challenges.
With light winds blowing from the ocean towards the coast, competitors had long days on the water, moments of waiting, and, above all, the opportunity to demonstrate the progress made during their training block in Portugal. Throughout nine intense races, each team tested their preparation, adjusting strategies and improving in key aspects.
For Max and Zac, this event was not only a test of performance, but also an opportunity to continue growing in their journey within the 49er class.
Zac tells us about his experience:
"Our training block in Vilamoura has come to an end, and what better way to finish it than with our first event of the year. Max and I have worked side by side with the British team to improve in every aspect and arrive in the best possible shape for this regatta.
Being new to the 49er class, I still have a lot to learn, but what I enjoy most is the intensity of the competition. The Vilamoura GP was incredible, with a large fleet and a motivating atmosphere. After a week of light winds and long days on the water, we managed to complete nine races and draw valuable conclusions about our progress.
A key moment was when we managed to pass the windward mark in second position, a sign that we are moving in the right direction.
We want to thank the Vilamoura Club for organizing the event and all our sponsors for their support. Especially, KOH Sunglasses, which have been a key part of our team: their quality, durability and design make them perfect for the demands of sailing.
Next on our calendar is the Trofeo Sofía in Palma, where I will compete for the first time. I can't wait to face this new challenge!"
With events like the Vilamoura GP, the Oceana Vivo team continues to demonstrate its ambition and commitment in the Olympic 49er class. Max and Zac's progress is evident, and with each regatta, they refine their strategy and skills on the water.
Now, with an eye on the Trofeo Sofía in Palma, the team is preparing for a new challenge, taking with them all the learning from Vilamoura and the support of their sponsors.
KOH Sunglasses will continue to accompany them in every competition, ensuring they have the best vision on and off the water.
See you at the next regatta! 🌊⛵😎
