Vilamoura GP: A start to the season with great progress for Oceana Vivo

Writer: KOH Sunglasses nullKOH Sunglasses null

The Vilamoura Grand Prix marked the start of the 2025 season for over 300 sailors, with six different classes competing in the Atlantic waters. Among them, the Oceana Vivo team, formed by Max Ross and Zac Blomeley , took part in the demanding Olympic 49er class, facing a week of changing conditions and tactical challenges.

With light winds blowing from the ocean towards the coast, the competitors had long days on the water, moments of waiting and, above all, the opportunity to demonstrate the progress made during their training block in Portugal. Throughout nine intense races, each team put their preparation to the test, adjusting strategies and improving in key areas.

For Max and Zac , this event was not only a test of performance, but also an opportunity to continue growing on their path within the 49er class.

Zac tells us about his experience:

"Our training block in Vilamoura has come to an end, wrapping up with our first event of 2025—and what a way to finish our time in Portugal! Max and I have been working closely with the British squad to make gains and put ourselves in the best position heading into this event.

Being new to the 49er Olympic class, I still have a lot to learn, but I absolutely love the racing, so I’m thrilled to be getting stuck in. One of the things I enjoy most about these events is the mix of classes, and the Vilamoura GP was no exception—with over six different classes and more than 300 competitors, the atmosphere was both intense and inspiring.

We had a week of soft Atlantic winds blowing onto the land, leading to long days on the water, some waiting around, but most importantly—nine great races. From all the work we’ve put in, we’ve made significant progress in key areas and now have a clear picture of what to focus on next. A standout moment for us was rounding the top mark in 2nd place—an exciting sign that we’re on the right track!

A huge thank you to Vilamoura Club for hosting us, and to all our sponsors for their support. KOH sunglasses have been a fantastic addition to the team—high-quality, durable, and perfectly suited for the demands of sailing.

Next up, preparation for the Trofeo Sofia in Palma—my first time racing there. Bring on the next steps!"

With events like the Vilamoura GP, the Oceana Vivo team continues to demonstrate its ambition and commitment in the Olympic 49er class. Max and Zac’s progression is evident, and with each regatta, they hone their strategy and skills on the water.

Now, with their sights set on the Sofia Trophy in Palma , the team is preparing for a new challenge, taking with them all the learning from Vilamoura and the support of their sponsors.

KOH Sunglasses will continue to accompany them in every competition, ensuring they have the best vision in and out of the water.

See you at the next regatta! 🌊⛵😎
